Empowering Girls Through Education: A Success Story of Itula AEP Child Care Center
July 18, 2025
In Palorinya Refugee Settlement, girls' enrollment in the Accelerated Education Program (AEP) faced significant challenges. Many interested girls couldn't join or had to drop out due to childcare responsibilities. Schools like Itula, Luru and Palorinya Secondary initially refused to accommodate child mothers, leading to humiliation and high dropout rates.
A Turning
Through persistent engagement in bi-annual coordination meetings and Mother-to-Mother Sessions, Itula Secondary's administration agreed to provide a childcare space. This breakthrough led to a significant increase in girl's enrollment, from 32 in 2024 to 77 in 2025, with improved retention and completion rates.
Impact on Students and Teachers
A level 2 learner and child mother expressed gratitude: "I want to thank War Child Canada for employing a childcare taker. I nolonger fear for my child's well-being, and i'm optimistic about better performance." Mr. Okenyi, the center's administrator, acknowledged the childcare's importance: "initially, teaching was challenging with children present in class, but now we enjoy teaching without interruptions."
Conclusion
The Itula AEP Childcare Center's success demonstrates the power of inclusive education. By providing childcare support, we can empower girls to pursue their education, break cycles of poverty, and build a brighter future.
